How do I search the library for career information for my CSS106 course?
Answer
- First, Don't forget that you have the Occupational Outlook Handbook available to you in the Bureau of Labor Statistics. https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ This must appear as one of your sources as per instructions of the assignment.
- First you will navigate to the career field accessible by the list on the left hand side of the homepage. Then it will give you a list of careers that fall under that field. The career information here will give all the statistical information needed for this assignment. It is also noted that the career titles here are very broad and you may need to search around different fields in order to find exactly what you want.
- In order to cite this information in your paper you should consider the Bureau of Labor Statistics as a corporate author. Use the Purdue Owl links available in the General Writing guide and find Works Cited or Reference information on Electronic sources, Page from a Website. https://egcc.libguides.com/general-writing-help
- You need only find one additional resource in the library. Therefore, in the library, the "Gateway Search Box" type: "[enter career name here]" Careers
- Remember to check off "Full Text."
- Also don't be afraid to play around with the career title. Say you're searching for "Music Producer" Perhaps use "Recording Producer" Or "Music Industry." Moreover, be very specific too if you're considering a specific career. If you are definitely considering policing, do not search generally for Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice. Search for police.
- One further piece of advice, the materials you will find in the library will most likely not have statistical information, hence the need to use this in concert with the OOH. The information found in the library will have advice for how to pursue a career in the field, anecdotes from people within the field, issues and news within the field (for example restauranteurs or hospitality people trying to rebound after Covid 19); or more theoretical material.
- Also you may want to search the A-Z databases (https://egcc.libguides.com/az.php) for a database that closely matches the career field. The following will be some common one's you may want to focus on:
