How can I add Gateway Search Content to my Canvas Course?

This question pertains to faculty who wish to add database content to their Canvas course.

Answer

Gateway Search content may be embedded into Canvas by going through the following steps.

Please note: The content in our databases changes frequently due to vendor-publisher licensing arrangements, so long term access to any content cannot be guaranteed. If a resource is needed as a long-term required part of your class, please contact the Library Director.

Step One: Add item to your Canvas Module

In your module where you would like to add the Gateway Search content, go to the module navigation bar and click the "+" to an item to your canvas module.

Add item to Canvas Module

Step Two: Choose "External Tool" from the list of item options.

Select "External Tool" from the bottom of the list and then click the blue "Add Item" button in the lower right corner.

Step Three: Select Gateway Search EDS

Select "Gateway Search EDS" from the list of available external tools and click the blue "Add Item" button in the lower right corner.

 Select Gateway Search EDS

Step Four: Search Gateway Search for Content

Use the Gateway Search to find content to be embedded into your module. Search by Title, Author, or Keyword. You may also enter a DOI # under keyword to locate an known resource. Search options, such as limit to full text, are available under the blue search button.

Step Five: Add Selected Content to Module

Once you have located the resource that you want, click the blue "+ Add" button to add the resource to your module.

Click the "+ Add" button to add content

Step Six: Publish the Resource in your module.

In order for your students to see the resource that you have just added, the final step is to publish the item. To do this, click on the circle in the item navigation menu. Once it is published you will see a green circle with a checkmark in it.

Publish your embedded resource

Step Seven: Verify that the item shows correctly.

Click on the link to verify that it is working correctly. Once you click on the link, you should be presented with a page that looks like the detailed record page in our databases. You may want to take note of where the link or PDF to the full text appears in case your students ask where they need to go to access the full text. On the right, you will notice that the Gateway Search's tool bar is also present. These features will continue to work while embedded into Canvas.
